Sightseeing in and around El Campello (Alicante)

For holidaymakers El Campello has the advantage of superb road and rail networks that allow you to explore with ease.

Hiring a car gives you freedom, lets you explore the fabulous places inland and also allows you to get off the beaten track. Check out the coastal towns mentioned on the tram route, but for inland places to visit the first recommendation has to be the town of Guadalest as this is justifiably one of the most popular excursions for tourists. With fabulous mountain views and a precariously placed lookout tower, this 16th century Moorish town oozes charm.

In the heat of summer the Algar Falls are a wonderful green and fresh oasis. The area in which they're situated is now a protected environment, but you can still swim in the pools and enjoy them to the full. You'll also find good facilities here such as toilets and a BBQ area allowing you to spend the whole day.

In the other direction, to the South you can visit the city of Elche with its 1000's of palm trees planted by the Moors. This 'forest' is totally unique in Europe and the crop of dates from the palms still produces an income for the town.

Finally don't miss the opportunity to visit the city of Alicanteto experience all it has to offer - it's not just for days when the sun doesn't shine!

Local Transport

But if you fancy a day off from driving or prefer not to hire a car then let's take a look at where you can go by tram.

The tram network is easy to use and very modern, having recently been upgraded. The track winds around the coast to Alicante City in the South passing beaches such as San Juan (said to be one of the most beautiful in Spain), the craggy bays of Cabos de la Huertas and Playa de la Albufereta.

Finally you reach Alicante where you are dropped off at the beach of Playa Postiguet and the Marina. Even if you manage just to visit the city, you will still enjoy the most fabulous views of the breathtaking coastline during the journey.

Going North you can visit the colourful town of Villajoyosa which has a bustling weekly market, whilst at the southern end of the beach you can find a slice of old Spain with multi-coloured houses squeezed into noisy narrow streets and washing hanging off balconies! This area is currently under-going complete refurbishment and the beach is finally getting the modern promenade it deserves.

Further along you reach the world renouned resort of Benidorm - for a full holiday guide to this exciting resort, visit www.benidorm-spotlight.com.

Love it or hate it Benidorm offers attractions like no other resort. Encounter the unique experience that Terra Natura can offer. Based on conservation and the environmental needs of the planet it also offers fun for all the family…where else can your holiday include swimming with sharks? Or if you have children in your party then the Theme Park of Terra Mitica is unmissable. And don't forget the nightlife, during summer the tram runs all through the night, so that if you want to experience the clubs and floorshows that Benidorm has to offer you can do so safely and easily.

A little further on from Benidorm is the town cum holiday resort of Altea. Here the old picturesque whitewashed village that clusters around the church high on the hill is the perfect opportunity for photos. The views of the coast from the church square are marvellous.

Finally, if you have more time or want to explore further then the tram takes you through Calpe before finally ending up at its destination of Denia.
