€145,000 to construct.
Alicante's main Hogueras celebrations when the monuments are burned are now over. Thousands and thousands of people jammed into the city centre to see thousands of Euro's worth of lovingly crafted artworks go up in smoke in the 80th anniversary of the fiesta.
Every year there's a competition for the best monument and this year the Hogueras association from the Florida Portazgo area won the prize. It's the first time that they've ever won and more than
makes up for last year when their labour of love fell over and broke. This year's, titled "El naixement de la terreta" cost €145,000 to construct.
To give an idea of the scale of the fiesta, around 176 monuments of varying sizes were burned to cinders with the record going to the Town Hall's monument which took almost an hour to burn due to its
rather solid country pine construction.
