His Royal Highness King Juan Carlos paid an official visit to Alicante on Sunday to inspect the installations in readiness for the start of the Volvo Ocean Race which starts here on October 11th.

The King didn't have to travel far because he was already in Alicante on a private visit – competing in another yachting event, the City of Alicante Trophy which is one of the heats of the Audi medCup. His boat 'Bribon' came second.

The visit demonstrates just how important the Volvo Ocean Race (it used to be called the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race) is to the city as the publicity it brings will convert Alicante into one of the world's sailing capitals.

Both the King and Francisco Camps, the President of the Valencian Community, who accompanied him are pressing for Alicante to host a stage of the next edition of the race.
