Alabici: Alicante Cycles

a fleet of 110 bikes based in 12 parking spaces

A new green scheme of bicycle hire called Alabici should get off the ground in Alicante in the next few months as the Energy Agency of Valencia have agreed to fund the scheme for the next four years.

The programme will start with a fleet of 110 bikes based in 12 parking spaces conveniently located around Alicante to dovetail in with local public transport, both bus and tram.

Members of the Alabici scheme (it will cost €30 per year but shorter durations are available) get a chip card which allows them to take a bike from the parking station and then return it to another one, with a computer controlled system keeping a track of the bikes and users.

The town hall reckon that not only will we all be somewhat fitter from getting on our bikes, but also 85 tons of petrol a year will be saved.
