Mayoress Makeovers

6.5 million marble tiles

Thanks to the feminine touch of Alicante's Mayoress, Sonia Castedo, some of the city's most emblematic symbols are getting a makeover. Number one on the list is the seafront Esplanade with its unmistakeable wave like mosaic pattern. Constructed 50 years ago using 6.5 million marble tiles which are a mere 4 cms square, the Esplanade is now showing signs of wear and tear.

The Mayoress has initiated a massive makeover of the entire promenade – replacing the tiles, gardens, lighting and seating areas which will cost a cool €57 million. The Spanish central government will give financial help with the costs of the project which will last from May until December this year.

Ms Castedo has also set about improving the view from her office window. The big plaza outside the town hall will have €1.6 million spent on cosmetic improvements which include funky fountains and a topiarytastic orchard of ornamental orange trees in its centre. This project should also be finished by the end of the year.
