Villajoyosa, Alicante - the sparkling Jewel of the Costa Blanca

Map showing the location of Villajoyosa

The brightly coloured facades

Villajoyosa is located just South of Benidorm (10 km) and only a 30 minute drive North from Alicante, on the N-332 along the coast.

The name means Jewelled Town, and Villajoyosa retains an authentic Spanish charm with vibrantly coloured houses (to guide the fishermen home), a busy fishing harbour with an afternoon fish market selling the freshest of the daily catch and a quaint town centre with a delightful little market place, artisan stalls and restaurants. It main source of income is fishing and chocolate.

The beach of VillajoyosaThe town of Villajoyosa stretches alongside a beautiful, palm-lined sandy beach which culminates in the little port. It is a lovely destination for a day trip away from Benidorm.

Tips

The Costa Blanca Casino lies midway between Benidorm and Villajoyosa. The stakes are low and it can be a very entertaining night out.

Fiestas in Villajoyosa

Moros y Cristianos - the Moors and Christians Festival - Last week in July

It is in the last week of July when the town of Villajoyosa really comes to life for the Moors and Christians festival - a re-enactment of the defeat of the Algerian Pirate Zala Arráez who came to ransack the town in 1538.

For seven days almost the entire town dress up as swashbuckling, gaudy, Moorish pirates or valiant Christian defenders to re-enact the valiant defence of the town. Spectacular fireworks, and lots of delicious food and drink for everyone. One of the best examples of this very popular Spanish fiesta.
