New Marq Exhibition

Published on 28th April, 2008

intricate works in precious metals

Alicante's MARQ museum has just opened a new exhibition – The Scythians. Treasures of Tuva – which will run until mid September. It features ancient artefacts from the 7th to 3rd centuries BC of the Tuva region of Russia. Not much is known about the Scythian peoples who inhabited the area at that time as they left no written evidence of their way of life, only these intricate works in precious metals.

All of the material on show comes from the St Petersburg Academy of Science and much of it is on show for the first time ever. It marks the start of a collaboration and cultural exchange between the MARQ and the Academy and as a display of its importance, the Russian ambassador had come along for the opening of the exhibition.

The Russians hope that the beautiful objects on show – over 600 of them – will demonstrate that Siberia, where Tuva is located, is not just snow and ice, but a cradle of ancient civilisation.

Why not take a look at the exhibition if you're in Alicante this year?
